The week before Great Lent is celebrated
by Russian Language Academy students.
Maslenitsa is a pagan and Christian
feast. Slavs celebrate the end of Winter
with Maslenitsa. Christians prepare to
fast during Lent. The feast translates
as “Butter Week” and features rich foods.
Students read poetry, sing songs, raise
toasts and feast on buttery Russian blini with caviar, smoked fish and
preserved fruits.
At the end of the celebration, Lady
Maslenitsa is burned and her ashes are scattered through the garden.
Learning Russian cultural traditions is a
strong reason for studying Russian at the Russian Language Academy.
